Colombia: Why this successful entrepreneur calls Medellín the best place to start a business today

Sovereign Confidential

Case Study

As you likely know, every summer my team and I host a phenomenal entrepreneurship camp in Lithuania. We spend a week teaching driven, motivated young people what they don’t teach at expensive B-schools. (The camp is completely free; if you know someone who could benefit from Sovereign Academy, send them here to apply for the 2017 session.)

One outstanding alum is named Zac. He is the opposite of those soft young people sitting around wailing for safe spaces.

Zac’s a doer. He has already started multiple successful businesses. He has traveled the world for years, seeking, as I do, the best places to plant entrepreneurial seeds.

And he has found the most fertile ground in the opposite exact of a safe space… Colombia.

I shouldn’t say opposite. According to Zac, others we know who live in Colombia, and my own travels there, Medellín in particular has come a long, long way since the days of Pablo Escobar.

These days, it is largely safe, vibrant, and the perfect place to start a business or two or three, as Zac has done. Why? Because it’s largely a blank slate.

Zac specializes in importing successful Western business models into emerging markets. You could go to Burma and do the same. Or, you could instead choose Medellín and enjoy indoor plumbing.

Zac has identified three main areas of business growth in Colombia and is generously sharing them with our SMC audience. This guy is a great example of someone who is crafting his own destiny, on his own terms, and creating his own rules. He may be young, but we all have something to learn from him.
