These countries could give you a second residency or passport in 2016

Monthly Letter

How many boxes have you ticked off on your own Plan B Checklist?

Aside from opening a foreign bank account, I view obtaining a second residency or a second passport as one of the most important moves you can make towards creating more freedom and prosperity for yourself and your family.

The process might seem intimidating from the outset.

But there are a number of ways to check that box. In this month’s letter, we talk about options that fit various lifestyles and personal circumstances.

For example, maybe your parents emigrated from a country that honors jus sanguinis, citizenship by blood ancestry. That makes your path much easier and cheaper.

But if that path is closed to you, then economic citizenship programs offer you another option.

The thing is, as we’ve talked about in Notes from the Field, most economic citizenship schemes are worth neither your time nor your money. They should be considered citizenship-by-donation programs rather than citizenship-by-investment ones.

In this month’s letter, however, we list some economic citizenship options that offer the possibility of either real returns, or recuperation of most of your investment.

If you’re a business owner, you can potentially control your own destiny, earning returns based on your hard work… and still gain residency to boot.

Some of you want to jump ship now. For you, we list countries that require applicants to physically move there for a few months or more to gain residency and citizenship.

Others of you cannot or don’t wish to move. We list possibilities for you as well. Panama, for example, is inexpensive, doesn’t make you live there, and helps you check off another box, that of opening a foreign bank account.

And for those readers who are high net worth individuals, we list options that might make spending some of that money worth your while.
