A former reporter I know used to dread covering Thanksgiving. Every year, the storyline remained the same, three days in a row.
On Wednesday, she would head to the airport, or to the highway. The story was, “People are traveling.”
On Thursday, she would highlight the clanging of the servingware, the post-turkey snoring, and the football cheering. The story was, “People are eating.”
And on Friday, she’d put on very comfortable shoes. It was the most grueling, exhausting day of all. The story was, of course, “People are shopping.”
If a certain toy or handbag was “in”, she would sometimes see people coming to blows over it. The crowds were crushing. So was the debt they were incurring.
Look, if it’s really important to you to drop $500 or more on a new PlayStation, go right ahead. I get it. People like ephemeral pleasures, and I’m not immune to that call, either.
But this year especially, given all the uncertainty, it also makes sense to consider gifts that really do keep on giving. Like a rare coin that could be worth double in a few years. Or a bottle of wine that might one day pay for your kid’s college degree.
VALUE is the operative word here. That’s why we’re sending out the 2020 version of our Sovereign Man Gift Guide, to give you a few ideas to mull.
Who knows? Perhaps you’ll even find something for yourself...
